Stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse in Akwa Ibom State have emphasized the need for a multi-dimensional approach to effectively curb the devastating effects of drug and substance abuse among youths and teenagers in the state.

The resolution was reached on 27th April, 2023 during the official launch of the Akwa Ibom State Drug Control Committee’s program, with the theme: “Substance Abuse: Raising Drug-Free Children in the Contemporary Society.”

Headed by Her Excellency Dr. (Mrs.) Martha Udom Emmanuel, the Wife of the Governor, the committee was inaugurated earlier this year to coordinate efforts and combat the menace of drug abuse in the state.

Dr. Emmanuel, in her remarks at the event, highlighted that the committee was established by the Federal Government and backed by law to address drug abuse and its devastating consequences, as well as the rise in crime rates. She urged parents and caregivers to fulfill their responsibilities in caring for and looking after their children, pointing out that many parents have failed in their primary duties.

The First Lady stated that the committee will launch an aggressive awareness campaign across all federal constituencies in the state, aiming to effectively convey the message. Additionally, the committee plans to visit schools to educate students about the dangers of illicit drugs.

Dr. Emmanuel mentioned the establishment of a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility at the NDLEA’s office for the treatment and rehabilitation of victims. She encouraged all individuals affected by drug abuse to take advantage of the center and seek help.

Recognizing the contributions of various organizations that have championed the fight against substance abuse in the state, Dr. Emmanuel echoed the voices of other participants, calling for a multi-dimensional approach to address the issue effectively.

Rev. Fr. Donatus Ukpong, delivering a keynote address, emphasized that substance abuse has become a significant public interest and a global health problem. He urged the government to prioritize the sustainability of family values, adopt international standards in information, treatment, and recovery, and design a specific, workable, and achievable framework to combat the menace.

During the event, goodwill messages were delivered by Mr. Uwemedimo Udo, Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Mrs. Felicia Bassey, Deputy Speaker of the AKHA, representatives of NUJ, NMA, and the Centre for Research and Documentation. They commended the AKS Government for taking the bold initiative to educate and manage cases, promising to engage people at the grassroots level.

Mrs. Esther Ukpe, the committee’s secretary, emphasized the role of parents in instilling the right values in their children and shared that the committee aims to establish drug-free clubs in schools.

The event also featured a panel discussion with seasoned and experienced panelists from various fields, brainstorming strategies to mitigate drug and substance abuse. Testimonies from repentant drug users added a powerful dimension to the event.
