Pastor Patience Umo Eno, the esteemed wife of the State Governor, recognizes this imperative and emphasizes that partnership is a necessary ingredient in the battle against drug abuse. Pastor Patience Eno, who also holds the pivotal role of Chairperson of the Akwa State Drug Control Committee (AKSDCC), underscored the significance of cooperation during an advocacy and sensitization tour on August 17, 2023. The tour took her to the Akwa Ibom State branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), an essential ally in the campaign against drug abuse.

Pastor Patience Eno’s message resonates clearly: the fight against the abuse of illicit substances demands the unwavering commitment of critical stakeholders. As she rightly states, desired outcomes can only be achieved when these stakeholders wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to eradicating the malaise from its very roots.

Speaking during the tour, the AKSDCC Chairperson acknowledged CAN’s crucial role as a strategic partner in this battle. By working hand in hand with religious leaders, the war against substance abuse can be given zero tolerance. Pastor Patience Eno stressed the importance of aligning messages with the fight against drug abuse. She highlighted the pivotal role religious leaders play in ensuring that the youth, women, and other vulnerable members of society are shielded from the clutches of illicit substances or the misuse of medical drugs.

Represented by the committee’s Secretary, Mrs. Esther Ukpe, Pastor Patience Eno further emphasized the comprehensive scope of AKSDCC’s responsibilities. From preventing drug abuse to curbing its menacing effects and providing essential support to victims, AKSDCC’s multifaceted role highlights the depth of their commitment. This call to action extended to CAN, urging them to integrate discussions about the dangers of drug abuse into their church programs. The message, she proposed, should span from Sunday School sessions to the main service sermons, ensuring that the congregation is well-informed.

In appreciation of the efforts to combat substance abuse, the State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, Bishop Chris Nyong, thanked Pastor Patience Umo Eno and Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel, the wife of the immediate past Governor. Bishop Nyong also underlined the importance of unwavering dedication from security operatives and allied agencies in the fight against substance abuse.

Bishop Nyong stressed the necessity of not only prevention but also the apprehension and conviction of those responsible for propagating the trade of illicit substances. His message resonates with a call for both practical action and strategic awareness efforts. Bishop Nyong’s plea for more sensitization and advocacy programs further reinforces the central role of education and awareness in combating the menace of drug abuse.

The voices of stakeholders resonated in harmony, advocating for a united front against drug abuse. Pastor Uwem Okon, Deputy Chairman of CAN, Reverend Isang Eyoumoh, Secretary of CAN, and Bishop Durable Osung, Youth Chairman of CAN, collectively urged the Akwa Ibom State Drug Control Committee (AKSDCC) to organize seminars that educate youth about the perils of drug and substance abuse, especially during holidays when vulnerability might be heightened.

The need for collaboration was further stressed by the Legal Adviser of AKSDCC, Barr Ruth Mfon, representative of NGOs, Mr. Isaac Udoudo, and Dr. (Mrs.) Rose Mfon. They illuminated the various forms in which drugs and illicit substances manifest and stressed the importance of joint efforts with AKSDCC and allied agencies to mitigate the incidents of drug-related issues.

In the journey towards a drug-free society, the unity showcased among these stakeholders serves as a beacon of hope. The collective resolve to fight drug abuse not only demonstrates the power of collaboration but also sets a promising precedent for addressing complex societal issues.
